This past summer, a group of student athletes attended Maryland Made’s Career Exposure Trip in Charlotte, North Carolina. During this event, Project Life Movement educated this group of student leaders on the importance and urgency of building the global stem cell/marrow registry. The Project Life Movement mission resonated with students, Maia Lee and Joey Schneck, who decided they wanted to partner with Project Life Movement on their campus.
The two are members of the Pre-Health Terps, a student organization at the University of Maryland for student athletes that are interested in healthcare. Maia and Joey pitched the idea for the group to host a tabling event on campus in the fall semester to build the global registry with Maryland students. They began planning a two-day event with Project Life Movement for the month of November.
The volunteers spent those two days educating their peers about the mission of Project Life Movement and the need to build the registry with healthy, young and diverse individuals. By the end of the event, the Pre-Health Terps were able to add 156 new potential donors. While this was the group’s first event with Project Life Movement, they are hoping to continue this partnership and expanding their reach on campus by working with other organizations and local hospitals for an event. These incredible students have been enthusiastically dedicated to finding as many matches as possible for blood cancer patients.
